Repair Guides

Difficult1.5–2 h10 steps

If your iPhone 11 refuses to charge, fails to connect to a computer, or has a loose Lightning cable connection that only works at specific angles, a faulty charging port assembly is likely the culprit. This repair involves replacing the entire lower flex cable assembly, which also houses the lower microphone and antenna connections. Because it requires removing the screen, loudspeaker, and Taptic Engine, this is a complex procedure that demands patience and precision.

  1. 1

Power Down and Remove Pentalobe Screws

    • Before starting, discharge your iPhone battery below 25% to minimize the risk of thermal runaway if punctured.
    • Turn off the device completely, then use a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver to remove the two 6.7 mm screws located on either side of the charging port.
  2. 2

Heat and Slice the Display Adhesive

    • Apply mild heat to the bottom and side edges of the phone using a heat gun or hair dryer for about 1–2 minutes to soften the waterproof adhesive.
    • Place a suction cup near the bottom of the screen, pull up with steady pressure to create a small gap, and insert a plastic opening pick.
    • Slide the pick carefully around the left, bottom, and right edges to slice through the adhesive, making sure not to insert the pick more than a few millimeters to avoid damaging internal cables.
  3. 3

    Open and Disconnect the Screen

    • Swing the display open from the left side toward the right, like opening a book, and rest it against a stable object so you do not strain the screen cables.
    • Use a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the metal bracket covering the battery and display connectors.
    • Crucial Safety Step: Always disconnect the battery connector first using a plastic spudger before touching any other cables.
  4. 4

    Remove the Display Assembly

    • Disconnect the display, digitizer, and front sensor assembly cables from the logic board using your plastic spudger.
    • Once all three cables are free, lift the screen assembly away from the housing and set it aside in a safe, dust-free location.
  5. 5

Remove the SIM Card Tray and Reader

    • Eject and remove the SIM card tray from the side of the phone.
    • Remove the screws securing the modular SIM card reader assembly, disconnect its flex cable from the logic board, and lift the reader out of the chassis.
  6. 6

Extract the Taptic Engine and Loudspeaker

    • Locate the lower speaker and Taptic Engine at the bottom of the phone.
    • Remove the Phillips and standoff screws securing the loudspeaker, disconnect its connector, and lift the speaker out.
    • Next, unscrew and remove the Taptic Engine, taking care when disconnecting its delicate ribbon cable.
  7. 7

    Unscrew the Charging Port Assembly

    • Remove the remaining screws securing the Lightning port connector and the lower microphones to the outer frame.
    • These include several small Phillips and standoff screws near the bottom edge of the phone.
    • Keep these screws organized, as they are of varying lengths and must return to their exact original slots.
  8. 8

Peel and Remove the Old Flex Cable

    • Unplug the charging port flex cable connector from the logic board.
    • Carefully slide a flat plastic spudger or opening pick underneath the flex cable to separate it from the adhesive holding it to the phone's aluminum frame.
    • Gently peel the assembly out, making sure not to tear any neighboring components or antennas.
  9. 9

Install the New Charging Port Assembly

    • Position the new Lightning connector flex cable into the frame, ensuring the microphone rubber gaskets and the charging port align perfectly with their corresponding holes in the outer shell.
    • Press down gently along the cable to secure it to the pre-applied adhesive, then plug the main connector back into the logic board.
  10. 10

    Reassemble and Test

    • Reinstall the Taptic Engine, loudspeaker, SIM card reader, and SIM tray in reverse order.
    • Apply a new display adhesive gasket to the frame, reconnect the screen cables, and plug the battery back in last.
    • Secure the metal brackets, close the display, reinstall the two bottom pentalobe screws, and power on the device to test charging and microphone functionality.

FAQ

Why is my microphone not working after replacing the charging port?

The lower microphone is integrated directly onto the charging port flex cable. If it isn't working, either the microphone was not aligned properly with its acoustic port hole in the frame during installation, or the flex cable connector is not fully seated on the logic board. Re-open the device and check the alignment and connection.

Do I need to transfer any parts from the old charging port to the new one?

Usually, high-quality replacement assemblies come with the microphones and metal brackets pre-installed. However, check if your replacement part is missing the rubber microphone gaskets or plastic alignment brackets; if so, you must carefully transfer them from the old assembly to the new one to ensure proper sound quality and fit.

Why does my iPhone 11 boot loop or restart every few minutes after this repair?

The iPhone 11 charging port flex cable contains a thermal sensor that communicates with the logic board. If you installed a low-quality aftermarket part, or if the connector is slightly loose, the system will fail to read this sensor and automatically restart the phone every 3 minutes. Always use high-quality or OEM-grade replacement parts to avoid this issue.

Is my iPhone still waterproof after replacing the charging port?

No smartphone is completely waterproof, but opening the device breaks the factory adhesive seal, significantly reducing its water resistance. Applying a new display adhesive gasket during reassembly restores basic splash resistance, but you should avoid exposing the phone to liquids after any manual repair.
