Repair Guides

Difficult1.5–2.5 h9 steps

If your iPhone 12 only charges when the cable is held at a specific angle, fails to connect to a computer, or refuses to accept a charge altogether, the Lightning connector assembly likely needs to be replaced. This is a highly complex repair because the charging port flex cable is routed underneath the motherboard, meaning a near-complete disassembly of the phone is required. Expect to handle many tiny, specialized screws and delicate ribbon cables, so patience and organization are key to a successful repair.

Required Tools

Pentalobe screwdriver (P2)Tri-point screwdriver (Y000)Phillips #00 screwdriverStandoff screwdriver (for logic board screws)Suction cup or suction handlePlastic opening picksNylon spudgerESD-safe tweezersHeat gun, hair dryer, or heating padReplacement iPhone 12 charging port flex assemblyReplacement display adhesive gasketMagnetic project mat (highly recommended for screw tracking)
  1. 1

Power Down and Remove Pentalobe Screws

    • Before opening the device, discharge the battery below 25% to minimize the risk of a dangerous thermal event if the battery is accidentally punctured.
    • Turn off the iPhone completely.
    • Remove the two 6.7 mm pentalobe screws located on the bottom edge of the phone, on either side of the charging port.
  2. 2

    Heat and Lift the Display

    • Use a heat gun or heating pad to apply mild heat (around 80°C) to the front edges of the phone for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the waterproof adhesive.
    • Place a suction cup on the lower half of the screen and pull upward with steady pressure to create a small gap between the screen and the frame.
    • Insert a plastic opening pick into the gap and slide it carefully around the perimeter to slice through the adhesive.
  3. 3

    Disconnect the Battery and Screen

    • Gently swing the display open to the right side like a book, being careful not to strain the display cables on the right edge.
    • Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the metal shield plates covering the motherboard connectors.
    • Disconnect the battery connector first to cut power to the board, then disconnect the display and front sensor assembly cables to completely free the screen.
  4. 4

Remove the Loudspeaker and Taptic Engine

    • Unscrew the securing screws holding the loudspeaker in place at the bottom of the phone and lift the speaker module out.
    • Next, disconnect the Taptic Engine's flex cable, remove its mounting screws, and extract the vibrator motor to clear the lower section of the chassis.
  5. 5

Remove the SIM Card Tray and SIM Module

    • Insert a SIM eject tool into the hole on the side of the phone to eject the SIM tray.
    • Inside the phone, unscrew the screws securing the modular SIM card reader to the frame, disconnect its ribbon cable from the logic board, and lift the reader module out.
  6. 6

    Extract the Logic Board

    • Because the charging port flex is routed underneath the motherboard, the logic board must be removed.
    • Carefully disconnect all remaining flex cables connected to the board (including the cameras, buttons, wireless charging coil, and antennas).
    • Remove the standoff and Phillips screws securing the logic board, then gently lift the board out of the housing and place it on an ESD-safe surface.
  7. 7

Remove the Barometric Vent and Old Charging Port

    • Remove the plastic barometric vent located next to the Lightning port.
    • Unscrew the screws anchoring the Lightning connector to the bottom frame, then use a spudger and a small amount of heat to gently peel the adhesive-backed charging port flex cable off the aluminum enclosure.
  8. 8

Install the New Charging Port Assembly

    • Position the new charging port flex cable into the housing, ensuring the integrated microphone and rubber gaskets align perfectly with their respective frame cutouts.
    • Press down firmly along the length of the flex to secure the adhesive backing, then reinstall the anchoring screws to lock the physical port in place.
  9. 9

    Reassemble and Test

    • Reinstall the barometric vent, logic board, SIM module, Taptic Engine, and loudspeaker in reverse order.
    • Clean off old adhesive residue from the frame, apply a new waterproof adhesive gasket, and reconnect the display cables.
    • Connect the battery cable last, secure all metal shield plates, close the display, and reinstall the bottom pentalobe screws.
    • Turn on the phone and test charging, computer connectivity, and microphone functionality.

FAQ

Why does my iPhone 12 still not charge after replacing the port?

If a high-quality replacement port does not resolve the issue, the problem may lie elsewhere. It could be a completely degraded battery, a damaged charging cable, or a failure of the USB controller IC (commonly known as the "Kraken" IC) on the logic board. Diagnosing a motherboard-level IC failure requires professional micro-soldering equipment.

Do I really have to remove the entire logic board for this repair?

Yes. The charging port flex cable is routed directly underneath the logic board and plugs into a connector on the underside of the board. Attempting to pull the old flex out or slide the new one in without removing the motherboard will almost certainly tear the delicate ribbon cable or damage surrounding board components.

Will replacing the charging port affect my Face ID?

No, the charging port is not linked to Face ID. However, because you must remove the screen and disconnect the front sensor assembly during disassembly, you must be extremely careful not to damage the upper sensor array (earpiece and flood illuminator). These components are cryptographically paired to the logic board; damaging them will permanently disable Face ID.

How do I preserve the water resistance of my iPhone 12 after this repair?

To maintain splash resistance, you must thoroughly clean all old adhesive residue from the frame and screen edges using isopropyl alcohol before reassembly. Apply a new pre-cut waterproof display adhesive gasket to the frame before pressing the screen back into place. Note that while this restores basic splash resistance, the phone should no longer be considered fully waterproof.
