Replacing the full housing (midframe) of an iPhone 14 is a highly advanced, dual-sided teardown reserved for when the aluminum chassis is bent, cracked, or severely dented. Unlike older models, the standard iPhone 14 features a central midframe architecture where both the front display and the rear glass must be removed to access the internals. This guide will walk you through stripping the entire phone down to its bare metal frame and transferring all components to a new housing.

  1. 1

    Power Down & Prep

    • Turn off the iPhone 14 completely.
    • If your model has a physical SIM card tray (non-US models), eject it now.
    • For safety, ensure the battery is discharged below 25% to minimize the risk of a thermal event if the battery is accidentally punctured during removal.
  2. 2

    Remove Bottom Screws

    • Use your P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 6.8 mm screws located on either side of the charging port.
    • Place these screws in a designated spot on your magnetic mat, as they are unique and must not be mixed up with internal screws.
  3. 3

Open and Disconnect the Back Glass

    • Apply heat to the back glass using a heat gun to soften the adhesive.
    • Attach a suction cup near the bottom edge, pull upward to create a small gap, and insert a plastic opening pick.
    • Carefully slice through the adhesive around the perimeter, then swing the back glass open to the left.
    • Unscrew the metal shield covering the connectors, disconnect the battery and back glass flex cables, and set the back glass aside.
  4. 4

    Open and Disconnect the Display

    • Flip the phone over and repeat the heating process on the front screen.
    • Use your suction cup and plastic picks to slice the display adhesive, being extremely careful not to insert the pick too deep on the right side where the display flex cable is located.
    • Swing the screen open to the right, unscrew the retaining bracket, disconnect the display cable, and remove the screen.
  5. 5

    Safe Battery Removal

    • With the battery connector already unplugged, locate the black adhesive pull-tabs at the top and bottom of the battery.
    • Grasp the tabs and pull them slowly and horizontally away from the battery to stretch and release the adhesive.
    • If a tab breaks, apply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol under the battery to soften the glue, then gently pry it out using a wide, flat plastic spudger (never use metal tools).
  6. 6

Extract the Rear Cameras & Logic Board

    • Unscrew the metal bracket securing the rear camera module and lift the cameras out of their recess.
    • Next, disconnect all remaining flex cables attached to the logic board (including antennas, charging port, and buttons).
    • Remove the standoff screws securing the logic board and carefully lift the board out of the frame.
  7. 7

Remove the Lower Assemblies (Taptic & Speaker)

    • Unscrew the securing screws for the loudspeaker and the Taptic Engine (vibrator motor) at the bottom of the phone.
    • Lift both components out of the old housing and place them on your organizer mat.
  8. 8

Peel Out the Charging Port & Antennas

    • Remove the screws holding the Lightning/charging port assembly in place.
    • Apply light heat to the bottom of the frame to soften the adhesive backing on the charging port flex cable, then use a plastic spudger to carefully peel the flex cable and its integrated microphones/antennas out of the frame.
  9. 9

    Strip Remaining Small Parts

    • Carefully peel out any remaining components from the old frame, such as the wireless charging coil, volume/power button flex cables, and upper antenna brackets.
    • These parts are highly fragile; use a heat gun to warm the frame from the outside before prying them up with anti-static tweezers.
  10. 10

    Rebuild into the New Housing

    • Take your new housing and begin transferring the components in reverse order.
    • Start with the delicate button flexes and wireless charging coil, followed by the charging port, Taptic Engine, speaker, logic board, and cameras.
    • Ensure all grounding clips and screws are tightly secured in their exact original positions.
  11. 11

    Apply New Seals and Reassemble

    • Thoroughly clean any leftover adhesive residue from the display and back glass frames using isopropyl alcohol.
    • Apply fresh, pre-cut adhesive seals to both the front and back of the new housing.
    • Reinstall the battery, reconnect the screen and back glass cables, screw down their respective metal brackets, and firmly press the glass panels into the new frame.
    • Secure the device with the two bottom Pentalobe screws.

FAQ

Will replacing the housing trigger "Important Component" warnings on my iPhone 14?

No, as long as you transfer your original logic board, cameras, battery, and display to the new housing. The housing itself does not contain serialized microchips, so swapping the metal frame will not trigger any software lockouts or warnings from Apple.

Why does the iPhone 14 open from both the front and the back?

Apple redesigned the standard iPhone 14 with a central aluminum midframe to improve repairability. This "sandwich" design allows technicians to replace a cracked back glass or a broken screen independently without having to completely gut the phone first, though a full housing replacement still requires a total teardown.

How do I safely transfer the wireless charging coil without tearing it?

The wireless charging coil is glued tightly to the center of the frame. To transfer it safely, apply heat to the opposite side of the frame to soften the adhesive, then slide a thin plastic card or spudger underneath the coil, keeping it flat to avoid tearing the delicate copper windings or the NFC antenna.

Will my iPhone 14 still be waterproof after this repair?

While applying new pre-cut adhesive seals restores a high level of dust and water resistance, a hand-repaired phone can never be guaranteed to match the factory IP68 rating. Avoid submerging the phone in liquid after completing this repair.
