Repair Guides

Moderate1–1.5 h12 steps

If your iPhone 11 is experiencing rapid battery drain, unexpected shutdowns, or sluggish performance due to battery degradation, a replacement is highly recommended. This guide will walk you through safely opening the phone, removing the old lithium-ion cell, and installing a fresh replacement. Be prepared to handle delicate ribbon cables and strong adhesives, and always prioritize battery safety during the procedure.

Required Tools

Pentalobe screwdriver (P2)Tri-point screwdriver (Y000)Phillips #000 screwdriverHeat gun or hair dryerSuction cup handlePlastic opening picksNylon spudger or plastic pry toolBlunt tweezersIsopropyl alcohol (90% or higher)Replacement iPhone 11 battery and adhesive stripsReplacement display waterproof gasket
  1. 1

    Discharge and Power Down

    • Before turning a single screw, discharge your iPhone's battery below 25%.
    • A fully charged lithium-ion battery poses a severe fire hazard if accidentally punctured or damaged during the repair.
    • Once discharged, power the device off completely.
  2. 2

    Remove the Bottom Screws

    • Locate the two 6.7 mm pentalobe screws on either side of the Lightning charging port.
    • Use your P2 pentalobe screwdriver to remove them.
    • Keep these screws separated, as they are specifically threaded for the outer housing.
  3. 3

    Soften the Display Adhesive

    • Apply heat to the bottom and side edges of the screen using a heat gun or hair dryer for about 2 to 3 minutes.
    • This softens the water-resistant adhesive holding the display to the frame, making it much easier to separate without cracking the glass.
  4. 4

Lift and Slice the Screen Seal

    • Place a suction cup on the lower half of the screen, just above the home button area.
    • Pull up with firm, steady pressure to create a tiny gap between the display and the outer frame, then insert a plastic opening pick into the gap.
    • Slide the pick carefully around the bottom and sides to cut through the adhesive, but do not insert it too deeply.
  5. 5

Open the Phone Like a Book

    • Gently swing the display open from the left side toward the right, using the right edge as a hinge.
    • **Do not attempt to fully separate the screen yet**, as delicate display and sensor ribbon cables are still connected on the right side.
    • Prop the display up at a 90-degree angle against a sturdy object to prevent straining the cables.
  6. 6

    Disconnect the Battery First

    • Use your Y000 tri-point screwdriver to remove the metal bracket covering the battery connector.
    • Lift the bracket away, then use a plastic spudger to gently pry the battery connector straight up out of its socket.
    • **Always disconnect the battery before touching any other internal components** to prevent electrical short circuits.
  7. 7

    Remove the Display Assembly

    • Unscrew the remaining tri-point screws securing the display cable bracket.
    • Remove the bracket, then use your plastic spudger to disconnect the display, digitizer, and front sensor assembly cables.
    • You can now safely set the display assembly aside.
  8. 8

Remove the Taptic Engine (Optional but Recommended)

    • For easier access to the battery adhesive pull tabs, remove the lower bracket and the Taptic Engine.
    • Remove the screws securing the Taptic Engine and its bracket, disconnect its flex cable, and lift the module out of the phone.
  9. 9

    Pull the Battery Adhesive Strips

    • Locate the black adhesive pull tabs at the top and bottom edges of the battery.
    • Grab a tab with your tweezers and slowly pull it away from the battery at a very flat, low angle.
    • Keep constant tension on the strip, wrapping it around your tweezers or a spudger as you pull, to prevent it from snapping.
  10. 10

    Extract the Battery

    • If all adhesive strips were successfully removed, the battery will lift out easily.
    • If a strip snapped, apply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol under the battery to soften the glue, wait a minute, and use a flat plastic card to gently pry the battery up.
    • **Never use metal tools or sharp objects to pry the battery.**
  11. 11

Install the New Battery and Reassemble

    • Clean any remaining adhesive residue from the phone's housing with isopropyl alcohol.
    • Apply new adhesive strips to the back of your replacement battery, position it carefully in the housing, and press down firmly.
    • Reinstall the Taptic Engine, lay down a new waterproof display gasket, reconnect all screen cables, and plug in the battery last.
    • Secure all internal brackets with their original screws, close the display, and reinstall the bottom pentalobe screws.
  12. 12

    Calibrate the New Battery

    • Turn on your iPhone and perform a calibration cycle.
    • Charge the phone to 100% and leave it on the charger for at least two additional hours.
    • Use the phone normally until it powers off due to a low battery, then charge it back to 100% without interruption.

FAQ

Why does my iPhone 11 show an "Important Battery Message" after replacement?

Apple pairs the original battery's microchip (BMS) to the motherboard at the factory. If you replace the battery yourself or use a third-party repair shop, iOS cannot verify the new battery's serial number, resulting in an "Unknown Part" warning. This message appears on your lock screen for 4 days and in Settings permanently, but it does not affect the phone's performance or safety.

Can I get rid of the "Unknown Part" warning and restore Battery Health tracking?

Yes, but it requires advanced techniques. The only official way is to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider perform the replacement. Alternatively, highly skilled micro-soldering technicians can cut the original Battery Management System (BMS) board off your old battery and spot-weld it onto the new battery cell, followed by using a specialized programmer to reset the cycle count.

What should I do if the adhesive pull tabs snap while removing the battery?

Do not panic, and do not use metal tools to pry the battery. Tilt the phone slightly and drop a small amount of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol under the side of the battery where the strip broke. The alcohol will dissolve the adhesive bond within a minute, allowing you to safely lift the battery out using a flat plastic card or a plastic spudger.

Will my iPhone 11 still be waterproof after replacing the battery?

No phone is permanently waterproof, but opening the device completely breaks the factory liquid-damage seal. While applying a new pre-cut adhesive gasket during reassembly will restore splash and dust resistance, you should avoid exposing the phone to liquids or submerging it after a manual repair.
