iPhone 11 Housing Replacement

This guide details the complete teardown and rebuild required to replace a cracked, bent, or severely damaged iPhone 11 rear housing. Because the housing serves as the structural chassis of the phone, this repair requires transferring almost every internal component to a new frame. Expect a meticulous process that demands patience, organized screw tracking, and a steady hand to avoid tearing delicate flex cables.

   Power Down and Prep

   • Before starting, discharge your iPhone 11 battery below 25% to minimize the risk of thermal runaway if punctured, and power off the device.
   • Remove the two 6.7 mm Pentalobe screws flanking the Lightning port at the bottom edge of the phone.

   Open and Remove the Display

   • Apply moderate heat to the front glass edges for 2 minutes to soften the waterproof adhesive, then use a suction cup and plastic pick to carefully slice around the perimeter.
   • Swing the screen open to the right like a book, unscrew the metal shield plates, disconnect the battery first, and then disconnect the display and front sensor assembly to free the screen.

   Extract the Battery

   • Locate the black adhesive pull-tabs at the top and bottom of the battery.
   • Slowly pull these tabs flat and parallel to the phone's surface to stretch and release the adhesive; if they snap, apply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol under the battery to dissolve the glue before gently prying it out with a plastic card.

   Remove the Rear Cameras and Logic Board

   • Eject the SIM card tray.
   • Unscrew the metal bracket covering the rear camera module, disconnect the camera press connectors, and lift the cameras out.
   • Carefully disconnect all remaining flex cables from the logic board, remove the standoff and Phillips screws securing the board, and lift the logic board out of the chassis.

   Extract the Speaker and Taptic Engine

   • Unscrew the brackets holding the loudspeaker and the Taptic Engine (vibrator motor) at the bottom of the housing.
   • Disconnect their respective flex cables and lift both components out, taking care not to damage the delicate grounding springs on the speaker.

   Remove the Charging Port Assembly

   • Unscrew the Lightning connector port and the microphone brackets from the bottom edge.
   • Gently apply heat to the underside of the housing to soften the adhesive holding the charging port flex cable, then slide a flat plastic tool underneath to peel the entire assembly away from the frame.

   Strip Remaining Flexes and Antennas

   • Remove the remaining screws securing the power button flex, volume button/wireless charging coil flex, and upper Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antennas.
   • Carefully peel these components out of the old housing using a spudger and a touch of isopropyl alcohol to loosen the factory adhesive.

   Prepare and Reassemble the New Housing

   • Ensure your new housing has the necessary small parts (like button brackets, microphone mesh, and rubber gaskets) installed, transferring them from the old frame if needed.
   • Reinstall all components in the exact reverse order of disassembly, applying fresh adhesive for the battery and the display frame before securing the screen and bottom screws.
