iPhone 11 Screen Replacement
If your iPhone 11 is suffering from a shattered glass front, an unresponsive touch digitizer, or display issues like vertical lines and dead pixels, a screen replacement is the definitive fix. This guide walks you through the delicate process of opening the phone, disconnecting the battery, and transferring the critical front sensor assembly. Take your time during this repair, as the sensor assembly is uniquely paired to your motherboard and is essential for maintaining Face ID functionality.
Required Tools
- 1
Safety and Power Down
- Before starting, ensure your iPhone's battery is discharged below 25% to prevent thermal runaway or fire if the battery is accidentally punctured during the repair.
- Press and hold the side button and either volume button, slide to power off the device completely, and remove any connected charging cables.
- 2
Remove the Bottom Screws
- Locate the two 6.7 mm P2 pentalobe screws flanking the Lightning charging port.
- Use your P2 screwdriver to remove both screws, placing them safely aside in a magnetic tray or organized workspace.
- 3
Soften the Perimeter Adhesive
- Apply heat to the bottom and side edges of the iPhone using a heat gun, hair dryer, or heated gel pack for about 1 to 2 minutes.
- This softens the strong waterproof adhesive sealing the display to the aluminum frame, making separation much easier.
- 4
Apply Suction and Create a Gap
- Position a suction cup on the lower half of the screen, just above the home area, and pull upward with steady, firm pressure.
- Once a tiny gap appears between the glass and the metal frame, slide a thin plastic opening pick into the seam to hold it open.
- 5
Slice the Adhesive Seal
- Carefully slide the opening pick along the bottom edge and up both sides of the phone to cut through the adhesive.
- Do not insert the pick more than a few millimeters to avoid damaging internal cables, and do not slice along the right side where the display flex cables are located.
- 6
Open the iPhone Like a Book
- Gently lift the screen from the left side, swinging it open toward the right (like the cover of a book).
- Rest the display against a sturdy object at a 90-degree angle so you do not put any tension on the delicate ribbon cables.
- 7
Remove the Connector Shield Plates
- Use your Y000 tri-point screwdriver to remove the five 1.1 mm screws securing the metal logic board cover bracket.
- Lift the bracket out with tweezers and set it aside, keeping track of which screw goes into which hole, as they are not all the same length.
- 8
Disconnect the Battery
- Use the flat end of a plastic spudger to gently pry the battery connector up and out of its socket on the logic board.
- Bend the cable slightly away from the board to ensure it does not make accidental contact during the rest of the repair.
- 9
Disconnect the Display and Sensor Cables
- Use your plastic spudger to disconnect the display cable, the digitizer cable, and the front sensor assembly connector.
- Once all three cables are safely unplugged, you can completely separate the old display assembly from the iPhone's chassis.
- 10
Transfer the Earpiece and Sensor Assembly
- On the back of the old screen, remove the four screws holding the speaker/sensor assembly (typically three Phillips and one Y000).
- Flip the speaker down, apply light heat to the front of the screen to soften the adhesive under the sensors, and use tweezers to carefully pry up the ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and flood illuminator before transferring the entire intact assembly to your new screen.
- 11
Apply New Waterproof Adhesive
- Clean off any remaining adhesive residue from the perimeter of the phone's aluminum frame using isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth.
- Carefully align and apply a new pre-cut waterproof adhesive gasket to the frame, peeling off the protective liners.
- 12
Reassemble and Seal the Device
- Plug the sensor, digitizer, and display cables back into the logic board, followed by the battery connector.
- Reinstall the metal bracket and its Y000 screws, swing the screen down, align the top clips first, and gently press around the edges to seat the display before securing it with the two bottom pentalobe screws.

FAQ
Will I lose Face ID after replacing my iPhone 11 screen?
No, as long as you successfully transfer the original front sensor assembly (which contains the flood illuminator) to the new screen without damaging it. If this assembly is torn or replaced with a new one, Face ID will be permanently disabled unless calibrated by Apple.
Why does my iPhone show an "Important Display Message" after the repair?
Apple pairs each screen to the original logic board. When iOS detects a different screen serial number, it displays a warning stating it cannot verify if the display is genuine. This message is normal, does not affect performance, and will disappear from your lock screen after a few days.
Can I keep the True Tone feature after replacing the screen?
True Tone is automatically disabled after a screen replacement, even if you use an original Apple screen. To restore True Tone, you must use a specialized screen programmer (like a JC V1S or QianLi iCopy) to read the screen data from your old display and write it onto the new one.
Why is it critical to disconnect the battery first?
Even when powered off, the logic board still has live voltage running through it. If you plug or unplug display cables while the battery is connected, you risk causing a short circuit that can permanently blow the backlight filter on the motherboard, requiring micro-soldering to fix.
My screen won't sit flush with the frame. What is wrong?
Ensure that the metal alignment clips at the top edge of the screen are properly slid into the frame before pressing the rest of the screen down. Also, check that no internal cables are pinched or folded awkwardly underneath the display.
