Repair Guides

Moderate1–2 h10 steps

If your iPhone 12 is struggling to hold a charge, shutting down unexpectedly, or showing a "Service" warning under Battery Health, it is time for a replacement. This guide will walk you through the process of opening the phone, safely removing the old battery, and installing a fresh one. Expect a delicate procedure that requires patience, a steady hand, and careful handling of the fragile OLED screen.

  1. 1

    Discharge and Power Down

    • Before starting, drain your iPhone 12 battery below 25% to minimize the risk of a thermal event if the battery is accidentally punctured.
    • Power off the device completely and unplug any cables.
  2. 2

    Remove the Pentalobe Screws

    • Locate the two 6.7 mm pentalobe screws on either side of the Lightning port at the bottom edge of the phone.
    • Use a P2 pentalobe screwdriver to remove them, keeping them safely organized for reassembly.
  3. 3

    Heat and Soften the Adhesive

    • Use a heat gun, hair dryer, or heated gel pad to warm the bottom edge of the iPhone for about 1 to 2 minutes.
    • This softens the strong waterproof adhesive securing the display to the frame, making it easier to separate.
  4. 4

    Slice the Screen Adhesive

    • Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the screen and pull up with steady pressure to create a small gap.
    • Insert a thin plastic opening pick into the gap and slide it carefully around the bottom and sides to slice through the adhesive, taking care not to insert the pick more than a few millimeters to avoid damaging internal cables.
  5. 5

    Open and Prop the Display

    • Gently swing the display open from the right side, using the left edge as a hinge (the display cables are on the left).
    • Prop the screen up at a 90-degree angle using a sturdy object to prevent strain on the delicate ribbon cables.
  6. 6

Remove the Bracket and Disconnect the Battery

    • Use a Y000 tri-point screwdriver to remove the screws securing the metal cover plate over the battery and display connectors.
    • Carefully lift the bracket out, then use a plastic spudger to gently pry the battery connector straight up from its socket on the logic board to cut all power.
  7. 7

    Disconnect and Remove the Screen

    • Use your spudger to disconnect the display and digitizer cables, as well as the front sensor assembly connector.
    • Once all three cables are free, lift the display assembly away from the frame and set it in a safe, dust-free spot.
  8. 8

    Remove the Lower Components

    • To gain clear access to the battery pull tabs, unscrew and remove the loudspeaker and Taptic Engine at the bottom of the phone.
    • This step significantly reduces the chances of tearing the adhesive strips during battery removal.
  9. 9

Pull the Adhesive Strips and Extract the Battery

    • Locate the four black adhesive pull tabs on the edges of the battery.
    • Grasp each tab with tweezers and slowly pull them out horizontally, keeping them flat and low to the frame to avoid tearing them.
    • If any tear, apply a few drops of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol under the battery, wait 2 minutes, and gently pry it up with a plastic card.
  10. 10

Install the New Battery and Reassemble

    • Clean any remaining adhesive from the frame, apply new adhesive strips to the back of the new battery, and press it firmly into place.
    • Reinstall the Taptic Engine, loudspeaker, apply a new display adhesive gasket to the frame, reconnect all cables (battery last!), screw the bracket back on, and seal the phone.

FAQ

Why does my iPhone 12 show an "Important Battery Message" after replacement?

Apple pairs the original battery's microchip (BMS) to the logic board. If you replace the battery yourself (even with an OEM Apple battery, unless configured via Apple's official System Configuration software), iOS will display an "Unknown Part" message and won't show the Battery Health percentage. The battery will still function perfectly.

What should I do if the adhesive pull tabs tear?

Do not panic or pry with metal tools, which can puncture the battery and cause a fire. Apply a few drops of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol around the edges of the battery to soften the adhesive, let it sit for 2 minutes, and then gently slide a plastic card under the battery to lift it.

Do I really need to remove the Taptic Engine and speaker?

While not strictly mandatory, it is highly recommended. Removing them gives you a flat angle to pull the bottom adhesive tabs, which drastically reduces the risk of tearing them.

Will my iPhone 12 still be waterproof after this repair?

The original factory liquid damage seal is destroyed when you open the phone. Applying a new pre-cut adhesive gasket during reassembly restores some water resistance, but you should no longer submerge the device or expose it to heavy moisture.
