iPhone 12 Rear Camera Replacement

If your iPhone 12 is taking blurry photos, failing to focus, showing a completely black screen when you open the camera app, or shaking due to a failed Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) motor, it is time to replace the rear camera module. This guide will walk you through safely opening the device, disconnecting the battery, and swapping out the dual-camera assembly. While the process is straightforward, it requires patience and a steady hand to avoid damaging the fragile OLED display.

   Power Down and Prep

   • Before starting, discharge your iPhone 12 battery below 25% to minimize the risk of a thermal event if the battery is accidentally punctured.
   • Power off the device completely and tape over any cracked glass on the screen to prevent injury or further breakage.

   Remove the Pentalobe Screws

   • Use a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver to remove the two 6.7 mm screws located on either side of the Lightning charging port.
   • Keep these screws separated from the internal screws, as they have a unique thread pattern and cannot be interchanged.

   Heat the Display Perimeter

   • Apply heat to the bottom edge of the iPhone using a heat gun or hair dryer for about 2–3 minutes to soften the waterproof adhesive.
   • Do not overheat the phone; it should be warm to the touch but not too hot to hold comfortably.

   Lift and Slice the Adhesive

   • Apply a suction cup to the lower half of the screen, pull up gently to create a small gap, and insert a plastic opening pick.
   • Carefully slide the pick along the bottom, right, and top edges to slice through the adhesive, taking care not to insert the pick more than 2–3 mm to avoid slicing internal cables.

   Open the Phone Like a Book

   • Gently swing the display open from the right side to the left.
   • The fragile display ribbon cables are located on the left side of the phone (the side with the volume buttons), so opening it from the right prevents tearing them.
   • Prop the screen up at a 90-degree angle against a sturdy object to prevent putting tension on the cables.

   Remove the Connector Covers

   • Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the screws securing the metal shield plate over the battery and display connectors.
   • Carefully lift the metal plate out with ESD-safe tweezers and set it aside, keeping track of which screw goes into which hole.

   Disconnect the Battery (Safety First)

   • Use a plastic spudger to gently pry the battery press-fit connector straight up out of its socket.
   • Disconnecting the battery immediately is a critical safety step to prevent short-circuiting the logic board during the rest of the repair.

   Disconnect and Remove the Display

   • Use your plastic spudger to disconnect the display and digitizer cables from the logic board.
   • Once the cables are free, lift the display assembly away from the housing and store it in a safe, dust-free location so it does not get scratched.

   Remove the Rear Camera Shield

   • Locate the rear camera module in the top-left corner of the phone and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws securing the metal camera bracket.
   • Lift the metal bracket out of the housing to expose the camera connectors.

    Swap the Camera Module

    • Use a plastic spudger to disconnect the two camera flex cables from the logic board, then gently pry the old camera module out of its recess.
    • Place the new camera module into the frame, press the connectors down until you feel a soft click, and reinstall the metal bracket and screws.

    Reassemble and Seal

    • Reattach the display cables, reconnect the battery, and screw the metal shields back into place.
    • If you have a replacement adhesive gasket, apply it around the frame before pressing the display back into the housing and securing it with the two bottom Pentalobe screws.
