Repair Guides

Difficult2–3 h10 steps

A full housing replacement is the ultimate repair for an iPhone 12 with a bent frame, shattered back glass, or severe structural damage. Because the rear glass is chemically fused to the aluminum chassis, replacing the entire housing is the cleanest and most durable way to restore your phone's structural integrity. This procedure is highly complex and requires a complete teardown, meaning you will transfer every single internal component—from the logic board to the smallest flex cable—into a brand-new chassis.

  1. 1

    Power Down and Prep

    • Before turning a single screw, power down the iPhone 12 completely and eject the SIM card tray.
    • Ensure the battery is discharged below 25% to minimize the risk of thermal runaway or fire if the battery is accidentally punctured during the repair.
  2. 2

Remove Bottom Screws and Heat the Screen

    • Unbolt the two 6.7 mm Pentalobe P2 screws located on the bottom edge of the phone next to the Lightning port.
    • Use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm the front edges of the screen for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the waterproof adhesive sealing the display.
  3. 3

    Lift and Open the Display

    • Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the screen and pull upward with steady pressure while inserting a plastic opening pick into the gap.
    • Carefully slide the pick around the perimeter to slice the adhesive, then swing the screen open to the left (like a book) to avoid tearing the delicate display and sensor cables.
  4. 4

    Disconnect the Battery and Screen

    • Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the metal bracket securing the battery and display connectors to the logic board.
    • Use a plastic spudger to pop off the battery connector first to cut all power, then disconnect the display and digitizer cables before setting the screen assembly aside.
  5. 5

Remove the Rear Cameras and Taptic Engine

    • Unscrew and lift away the metal covers protecting the rear camera module, the lower speaker, and the Taptic Engine.
    • Disconnect the camera press connectors and lift the camera out, then unscrew and remove the Taptic Engine and lower speaker assembly.
  6. 6

    Extract the Logic Board

    • Disconnect all remaining flex cables attached to the logic board, including the front camera/Face ID assembly, charging port, and antennas.
    • Remove the standoff and Phillips screws securing the logic board, then carefully lift the board out of the frame and store it on an anti-static mat.
  7. 7

    Pull the Battery

    • Locate the black adhesive pull-tabs at the top and bottom edges of the battery.
    • Slowly pull each tab horizontally away from the battery to stretch and release the adhesive; if they break, apply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol under the battery to soften the glue before gently prying it out with a plastic card.
  8. 8

Strip the Remaining Flex Cables and Antennas

    • Carefully peel out the charging port assembly, the power/volume button flex cables, the wireless charging coil, and the upper antenna modules.
    • Use light heat from the back of the old frame to soften the adhesive holding these delicate ribbon cables in place before lifting them with tweezers.
  9. 9

Prepare and Populate the New Housing

    • Clean the interior of the new housing and begin transferring the components in reverse order, starting with the button flex cables, wireless charging coil, and charging port.
    • Ensure all grounding clips and small rubber gaskets are aligned perfectly with their corresponding screw holes.
  10. 10

    Reassemble and Seal

    • Reinstall the logic board, battery (using fresh adhesive strips), cameras, speaker, and Taptic Engine.
    • Apply a new pre-cut waterproof adhesive gasket to the frame's edge, reconnect the display and battery, screw down the internal brackets, and press the screen firmly into place before securing the bottom pentalobe screws.

FAQ

Can I just replace the back glass instead of the whole housing?

Yes, but it is extremely difficult and messy. The back glass is fused to the frame with ultra-strong epoxy. Removing it requires a specialized fiber laser machine or hours of tedious hand-scraping with a heat gun, which can easily damage internal components or the wireless charging coil. A housing swap is cleaner and yields a factory-perfect finish.

Will I lose Face ID or True Tone after a housing replacement?

No, as long as you transfer your original front sensor assembly (attached to the screen) and your original front camera/Face ID module (attached to the logic board) without damaging them. These parts are cryptographically paired to your logic board.

My new housing doesn't have the MagSafe magnets. What should I do?

Some aftermarket housings do not come with the MagSafe magnet ring pre-installed. You must carefully transfer the magnetic ring from your old housing to the new one, or purchase a housing that already has the MagSafe magnets and wireless charging coil pre-assembled to save time.

Why is it critical to disconnect the battery first?

Disconnecting the battery immediately cuts power to the logic board. If you attempt to unplug other components (like the screen or cameras) while the battery is connected, you risk causing an electrical short that can permanently damage the logic board's backlight filters or other micro-components.

How do I maintain water resistance after this repair?

While you should apply a new pre-cut waterproof adhesive gasket during reassembly, a hand-repaired phone will never have the same factory-certified IP68 water resistance. Treat the phone as non-waterproof after the repair and avoid exposing it to liquids.
