Repair Guides

Moderate45–90 min11 steps

If your iPhone 12 has cracked glass, an unresponsive touch digitizer, or display issues like green lines and black spots, a screen replacement is the definitive fix. This guide walks you through safely opening the device, transferring the delicate Face ID sensor assembly, and installing a new OLED panel. While the process is highly precise, a methodical approach and the right tools will help you achieve a professional-grade repair at home.

  1. 1

    Power Down and Safety Prep

    • Before starting, discharge your iPhone 12 battery below 25% to minimize the risk of a thermal runaway if the battery is accidentally punctured during the repair.
    • Power off the device completely and set up a clean, static-safe workspace.
  2. 2

    Remove the Bottom Pentalobe Screws

    • Locate the two 6.7 mm Pentalobe (P2) screws on either side of the Lightning port.
    • Use a dedicated P2 screwdriver to remove them, placing them in a magnetic organizer to avoid losing them.
  3. 3

    Heat the Adhesive Seal

    • Use a heat gun, hair dryer, or heated pad to apply gentle heat to the bottom and side edges of the display for about 1–2 minutes.
    • This softens the strong waterproof adhesive seal holding the screen to the aluminum frame.
  4. 4

    Separate the Screen

    • Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the screen, just above the Lightning port.
    • Pull up with steady, gentle pressure to create a tiny gap, then insert a thin plastic opening pick.
    • Slide the pick around the bottom, right, and top edges—keeping the pick shallow (under 3 mm) to avoid tearing the delicate display and sensor cables on the left side.
  5. 5

Open the iPhone Like a Book

    • Carefully swing the display open to the left side, using the left edge as a hinge.
    • Do not try to fully separate the screen yet, as fragile ribbon cables are still connected to the logic board.
    • Prop the screen up at a 90-degree angle against a sturdy object to prevent strain on the cables.
  6. 6

Disconnect the Battery and Display Cables

    • Use a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the lower metal cowling (bracket) over the battery and display connectors.
    • Lift away the bracket with tweezers, then use a plastic spudger to pop off the battery connector first (to cut power), followed by the display and digitizer connectors.
  7. 7

    Disconnect the Front Sensor Assembly

    • Use your Y000 screwdriver to remove the four screws holding the upper metal cowling in place.
    • Lift off the bracket, then use your plastic spudger to gently disconnect the front sensor/earpiece speaker assembly cable from the logic board, freeing the screen completely.
  8. 8

Remove the Earpiece Speaker and Sensor Assembly

    • On the back of the old screen, remove the four screws securing the speaker and sensor assembly (two Phillips and two Y000 screws).
    • Carefully flip the speaker down, then apply a small amount of heat to the front of the screen to soften the adhesive holding the sensors.
    • Use tweezers and a spudger to gently pry the microphone, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and flood illuminator out of their plastic recesses.
  9. 9

Install the Sensors on the New Screen

    • Carefully position the microphone, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor into their matching slots on the back of the new display.
    • Flip the earpiece speaker back over them, align the screw holes, and secure the assembly using the four screws removed in the previous step.
  10. 10

Apply New Frame Adhesive and Reconnect

    • Clean off any old adhesive residue from the iPhone's frame using isopropyl alcohol, then apply a new pre-cut waterproof adhesive gasket.
    • Connect the front sensor assembly cable, followed by the display and digitizer cables, and finally the battery connector.
  11. 11

Secure the Cowlings and Close the Device

    • Place the upper and lower metal brackets back over their respective connectors and secure them with their original Tri-point Y000 screws.
    • Align the top edge of the screen with the frame, gently press down along the sides to seal the adhesive, and reinstall the two bottom Pentalobe screws.

FAQ

Will replacing my screen disable Face ID?

Face ID will continue to work normally as long as you carefully transfer the original earpiece speaker and front sensor assembly to the new screen without damaging them. The flood illuminator and proximity sensor are cryptographically paired to your logic board at the factory; if they are damaged or replaced, only Apple or an authorized technician can restore Face ID.

Why does my iPhone show an "Important Display Message" after the repair?

Apple pairs the original screen's serial number to the logic board. If you replace the screen (even with an original Apple screen from another device), iOS will display a non-genuine screen warning. On iOS 18 and newer, you can use Apple's built-in "Repair Assistant" in Settings to calibrate the new screen and remove this message, provided you used a genuine Apple replacement part.

What is the best way to avoid damaging the screen during removal?

The iPhone 12 uses an extremely flat OLED screen that is highly susceptible to cracking if flexed. Always apply sufficient heat, use plastic opening picks instead of metal tools, and never insert the pick deeper than 3 mm. Additionally, remember to open the screen to the left, as opening it to the right or pulling too hard will tear the internal flex cables.

Do I really need to disconnect the battery first?

Absolutely. Working on an active circuit increases the risk of a short circuit, which can permanently damage the backlight filter, touch IC, or other motherboard components. Always disconnect the battery immediately after removing the lower cowling before touching any other connectors.
