Repair Guides

Moderate1–1.5 h12 steps

If your iPhone 13 rear camera is showing a black screen, failing to focus, shaking constantly, or producing blurry photos, it is likely time to replace the dual-camera module. Performing this repair requires opening the device, which breaks the factory waterproof seal, so applying a replacement adhesive gasket during reassembly is highly recommended. With patience, the right tools, and a steady hand, you can restore your phone's photography capabilities to like-new condition.

  1. 1

    Power Down and Discharge

    • Turn off your iPhone 13 completely before starting.
    • Ensure the battery is discharged below 25% to minimize the risk of a dangerous thermal event if the battery is accidentally punctured during the repair.
  2. 2

    Remove Bottom Screws

    • Use a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver to remove the two 6.7 mm screws located on either side of the Lightning port.
    • Keep these screws separated, as they are uniquely threaded for the bottom frame.
  3. 3

    Soften the Screen Adhesive

    • Apply heat to the bottom edge of the phone using a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting for about 1 to 2 minutes.
    • This softens the strong adhesive sealing the screen to the frame.
    • Do not overheat the phone; it should be warm to the touch but not hot.
  4. 4

Create a Gap and Insert Pick

    • Place a suction cup near the bottom edge of the screen, just above the home indicator area.
    • Pull up with firm, steady pressure to create a tiny gap between the display glass and the frame, then slide a plastic opening pick into the gap.
  5. 5

    Slice the Perimeter Adhesive

    • Slowly slide the plastic pick around the bottom and up the sides of the phone to cut through the adhesive.
    • Be extremely careful on the left side of the phone; do not insert the pick deeper than 2–3 mm to avoid slicing the delicate display and sensor cables.
  6. 6

    Open the Phone Safely

    • Swing the display open from the right side to the left, like opening the cover of a book.
    • Prop the screen up securely at a 90-degree angle against a sturdy object to prevent putting any tension on the display ribbon cables.
  7. 7

    Remove Connector Shields

    • Use a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the screws securing the metal battery and display connector cover.
    • Use precision tweezers to lift the metal shield out of the phone and set it aside, keeping track of which screw goes into which hole.
  8. 8

    Disconnect the Battery First

    • Use the flat edge of a plastic spudger to gently pry up and disconnect the battery connector.
    • Never use metal tools for this step, and always disconnect the battery before unplugging any other components to prevent short circuits.
  9. 9

    Disconnect and Remove the Screen

    • Disconnect the display and digitizer cables from the logic board using your plastic spudger.
    • Once the cables are free, lift the screen assembly away and store it in a safe, dust-free location.
  10. 10

    Remove the Camera Bracket

    • Locate the metal bracket covering the rear camera assembly in the top-right corner of the phone frame.
    • Remove the securing screws holding the bracket in place, then lift the bracket away with tweezers.
  11. 11

    Disconnect and Swap the Camera

    • Use a plastic spudger to pop off the two press-fit camera connectors from the logic board.
    • Gently pry the faulty dual-camera module out of its recessed housing and lift it out of the phone, then press the new camera module into place.
  12. 12

    Test and Reassemble

    • Reconnect the camera press-fit connectors.
    • Temporarily connect the screen and battery to power on the phone and test both rear camera lenses; if they work perfectly, power down, apply a new adhesive gasket to the frame, and reassemble the phone in reverse order.

FAQ

Will replacing the rear camera trigger an "Important Camera Message" on my iPhone 13?

Yes. Apple pairs the original camera to the logic board using cryptographic serialization. If you replace the camera yourself with an OEM or aftermarket part, iOS will display an "Important Camera Message" in Settings stating it cannot verify if the camera is a genuine Apple part. However, the camera itself will still function normally.

How do I get rid of the "Important Camera Message" after repair?

To remove the warning and fully calibrate the new camera, you must use Apple's Self Service Repair program to purchase a genuine camera and run their cloud-based System Configuration software, or take the device to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to perform the calibration.

My camera lens glass is cracked, but the camera sensor works fine. Do I need to replace the whole camera?

No. If only the external glass circles on the back of the phone are cracked, you can replace just the camera lens glass from the outside using heat, tweezers, and a replacement lens kit, without opening the entire phone. Only replace the internal camera module if you have sensor issues, focusing problems, or a black screen.

Why is it crucial to disconnect the battery first?

Even when the phone is turned off, the logic board has live standby power. Touching internal components or connectors with metal tools or misaligning a connector while the battery is connected can cause a short circuit, permanently damaging the backlight filter or the logic board.
