If your iPhone 13 screen is cracked, unresponsive to touch, or completely black, a display replacement is the best way to restore your device to perfect working order. This guide will walk you through the process of opening the chassis, safely disconnecting the battery, and transferring the critical front sensor assembly to your new screen. While this repair is highly achievable for a patient DIYer, it requires a steady hand, precise screw tracking, and careful handling of delicate ribbon cables.

   Prep and Power Down

   • Discharge your iPhone battery below 25% to minimize the risk of a dangerous thermal event if the battery is accidentally punctured during the repair.
   • Turn off the phone completely.
   • If your screen is severely cracked, apply a layer of clear packing tape over the glass to keep it intact and protect your eyes from stray glass shards.

   Remove the Bottom Pentalobe Screws

   • Put on your safety glasses.
   • Use a P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 6.8 mm-long screws located on the bottom edge of the phone, on either side of the Lightning charging port.
   • Keep these screws separated, as they are specifically threaded for the outer frame.

   Heat the Frame Adhesive

   • Use a heat gun or hair dryer to apply heat to the bottom edge of the iPhone for approximately 2 minutes.
   • This softens the strong watertight adhesive sealing the display to the frame.
   • The glass should feel warm to the touch, but not uncomfortably hot.

   Create an Opening Gap

   • Apply a suction handle to the lower half of the screen, just above the charging port.
   • Pull upward with steady, firm pressure to create a tiny gap between the screen's plastic bezel and the metal frame.
   • Insert the tip of a plastic opening pick into the gap no more than 3 mm to avoid slicing internal components.

   Slice the Perimeter Adhesive

   • Carefully slide your opening pick around the bottom, left, and right edges of the phone to cut through the softened adhesive.
   • Apply more heat to the sides and top edge as you go.
   • Crucial: Do not insert the pick deeper than 3 mm, especially along the left edge where the delicate display and sensor cables are located.

   Open the iPhone "Book-Style"

   • Gently swing the display open from the right side (where the power button is) toward the left, like opening the cover of a book.
   • Do not try to fully separate the screen yet, as it is still connected by fragile ribbon cables on the left side.
   • Prop the screen up at a 90-degree angle against a sturdy box or holder to keep tension off the cables.

   Remove the Connector Cover

   • Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the three 1.3 mm screws securing the metal cover over the battery and display connectors.
   • Carefully lift and remove the cover.
   • Keep track of these screws, as putting them back in the wrong holes during reassembly can cause permanent motherboard damage ("long-screw damage").

   Disconnect the Battery and Display

   • Use the flat edge of a plastic spudger to gently pry up and disconnect the battery connector from its socket.
   • Always disconnect the battery first before touching any other connectors to prevent electrical shorts.
   • Once the battery is disconnected, use the spudger to disconnect the display cable connector.

   Disconnect and Remove the Screen

   • Use your spudger to disconnect the front sensor assembly cable connector near the top of the logic board.
   • With all cables disconnected, you can now safely lift the display assembly completely away from the phone chassis.

    Transfer the Front Sensor Assembly

    • On the back of the old screen, use a Y000 tri-point screwdriver to remove the three 1.4 mm-long screws securing the sensor assembly bracket, then remove the bracket.
    • Apply light heat to the front of the screen to soften the adhesive holding the sensors.
    • Carefully pry up the ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and microphone using an opening pick or tweezers, then transfer the entire assembly to the new screen.

    Apply New Adhesive and Reassemble

    • Clean any remaining adhesive from the phone's metal frame using isopropyl alcohol and a spudger.
    • Apply a new pre-cut adhesive gasket to the frame.
    • Reconnect the front sensor assembly, display cable, and battery connector (always connect the battery last).
    • Temporarily power on the phone to test the new screen and touch functionality before sealing.

    Close and Secure the Phone

    • Power the phone back down.
    • Reinstall the metal connector cover and secure it with the three Phillips screws.
    • Align the top edge of the display into the frame first, then gently press down along the sides to seat the screen.
    • Reinstall the two P2 Pentalobe screws at the bottom.
