Repair Guides

Moderate1–2 h10 steps

If your iPhone 14 has a shattered front glass, unresponsive touch controls, or a completely black display, a screen replacement is the definitive fix. While Apple redesigned the iPhone 14 to open from both the front and back, replacing the screen still requires patience and precision to avoid damaging delicate internal components. This guide will walk you through safely opening the phone, transferring the critical Face ID sensor assembly, and installing your new display.

  1. 1

    Prepare and Power Down

    • Before starting, discharge your iPhone 14 battery below 25%.
    • A fully charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire or explode if accidentally punctured during the repair.
    • Turn off the phone completely by holding the side button and either volume button, then sliding the power-off switch.
  2. 2

    Remove the Bottom Screws

    • Locate the two 6.8 mm Pentalobe P2 screws on the bottom edge of the phone, flanking the Lightning charging port.
    • Use your P2 screwdriver to remove both screws and store them in a secure organizer tray.
  3. 3

    Heat the Display Perimeter

    • Use a heat gun or hair dryer to apply moderate heat around the outer edges of the screen for about 2 to 3 minutes.
    • This softens the strong waterproof adhesive securing the display to the aluminum frame, making separation much easier.
  4. 4

    Create an Opening Gap

    • Place a suction cup on the lower half of the screen, just above the charging port area, and pull upward with steady, firm pressure.
    • Once a tiny gap appears between the glass and the frame, insert a plastic opening pick into the seam.
  5. 5

    Slice the Adhesive

    • Gently slide the opening pick along the bottom edge and up both sides of the phone to cut through the adhesive.
    • Do not insert the pick deeper than 3 mm, especially on the left side, to avoid slicing the fragile display ribbon cables.
  6. 6

Open the Phone Like a Book

    • Carefully lift the right side of the screen and swing it open to the left, using the left edge as a hinge.
    • Prop the display upright against a sturdy object at a 90-degree angle so you do not strain or tear the connected ribbon cables.
  7. 7

    Remove the Connector Bracket

    • Use a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the screws securing the metal shield that covers the battery and display connectors.
    • Use tweezers to lift the bracket out of the phone and set it aside.
    • Keep track of these screws, as they are of different lengths.
  8. 8

    Disconnect the Battery and Screen

    • Use a plastic spudger to pry the battery connector straight up out of its socket; always disconnect the battery first to prevent electrical short circuits.
    • Once the power is cut, disconnect the display and front sensor assembly cables in the same manner, then remove the old screen.
  9. 9

    Transfer the Front Sensor Assembly

    • Unscrew the bracket holding the front sensor assembly (which controls Face ID and ambient light) on the back of the old screen using your Y000 screwdriver.
    • Apply mild heat to the front of the glass to loosen the sensor adhesive, then use tweezers and a spudger to carefully peel the sensor cable off the old screen and install it onto the new one.
  10. 10

    Apply New Adhesive and Reassemble

    • Clean any leftover adhesive residue from the phone's frame with isopropyl alcohol, then apply a new precut adhesive gasket.
    • Reconnect the front sensor and display cables, plug the battery back in, reinstall the metal bracket with its Y000 screws, and gently press the screen down into the frame to seal it.

FAQ

Will I lose Face ID after replacing my iPhone 14 screen?

No, as long as you carefully transfer the original front sensor assembly from your old screen to the new one. The sensor assembly is factory-paired to your logic board. If you damage this cable or use a replacement sensor assembly, Face ID will be permanently disabled unless calibrated by Apple.

Why is there an "Important Display Message" or "Unknown Part" warning after the repair?

Apple uses software-based parts pairing. If you replace the screen yourself (even with an original Apple screen), iOS will display a non-genuine warning in Settings. This warning does not affect the performance or touch response of the screen and will eventually disappear from your lock screen.

Will my phone still be waterproof after replacing the screen?

No, opening the phone breaks the factory liquid-resistant seal. While applying a new adhesive gasket helps restore some dust and splash resistance, the device should no longer be considered fully waterproof or submerged in water.

Can I replace just the cracked outer glass instead of the whole screen?

Technically possible in specialized refurbishing labs, but highly impractical for a DIY repair. The glass, digitizer, and OLED panel are fused together. Replacing the entire display assembly is the standard, safest, and most reliable method.
