iPhone 17 Air Battery Replacement
If your iPhone 17 Air is experiencing rapid power drain, unexpected shutdowns, or a swollen battery, it is time for a replacement. Apple designed this ultrathin model to open from the back glass, making internal access much safer for technicians. The device also features an electrically induced adhesive system, allowing you to remove the metal-cased 3149 mAh battery with a simple 9V power source instead of dangerous prying.
Required Tools
- P2 Pentalobe screwdriver
- Y000 Tripoint screwdriver
- Phillips #000 screwdriver
- Heating pad or heat gun
- Suction cup handle
- Plastic opening picks
- 9V battery with alligator clips (or dedicated voltage release tool)
- Isopropyl alcohol (high concentration)
- Replacement battery and new adhesive strips
- Replacement water resistant back glass adhesive
Step by step
- 1
Step 1: Remove the Pentalobe screws
Power off your iPhone 17 Air completely before beginning the repair.
Locate and remove the two P2 Pentalobe screws flanking the USB-C charging port at the bottom edge of the device.
- 2
Step 2: Heat the back glass
Place the phone face down on a heating pad to soften the water resistant adhesive securing the rear panel.
Leave it for about three minutes at 80 degrees Celsius to ensure the glue is pliable enough for safe separation.
- 3
Step 3: Slice the perimeter adhesive
Apply a suction cup to the bottom of the back glass and pull up gently to create a slight gap.
Insert a plastic opening pick into the gap and carefully slide it around the perimeter to cut the adhesive, being mindful of the top hinges.
- 4
Step 4: Open the rear panel
Once the adhesive is cut, lift the back glass from the bottom like a book cover.
Do not pull it away completely, as a delicate flex cable still connects the rear panel to the logic board.
- 5
Step 5: Disconnect the back glass and battery
Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the metal bracket covering the logic board connectors.
Disconnect the rear panel flex cable and the battery connector using a plastic spudger to ensure the device is completely depowered.
- 6
Step 6: Apply voltage to the battery adhesive
The iPhone 17 Air uses an electrically induced adhesive to secure the metal-cased battery.
Connect the positive and negative alligator clips from your 9V battery to the designated silver tabs on the battery adhesive strip.
- 7
Step 7: Remove the old battery
Wait approximately sixty seconds while the electrical current neutralizes the adhesive bond.
Once the glue releases, you can simply lift the old battery out of the chassis without any forceful prying or scraping.
- 8
Step 8: Prep the chassis
Wipe the battery compartment with a microfiber cloth and a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to remove any residual oils or debris.
Ensure the area is completely dry before installing the new components.
- 9
Step 9: Install the new battery
Peel the protective liners off your new adhesive strips and place them into the chassis.
Firmly press the new replacement battery into the housing so it bonds securely, then reconnect the battery flex cable to the logic board.
- 10
Step 10: Seal and reassemble
Apply a new water resistant adhesive seal around the perimeter of the phone frame.
Reconnect the back glass flex cable, secure the metal bracket with its screws, and press the back glass firmly into place before reinstalling the bottom Pentalobe screws.

Frequently asked questions
A battery replacement does not erase your data, but you should always back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer before starting any hardware repair.
Apple pairs components to the logic board, so a new battery will trigger a warning message unless it is calibrated using the official diagnostic software. The battery will still function perfectly despite this notification.
It is highly discouraged to pry the metal-cased battery, as the electrically induced adhesive is extremely strong when not neutralized. Prying can bend the chassis or puncture the battery, creating a severe fire hazard.
The device will lose its original factory water resistance once opened. You must apply a new precut adhesive seal during reassembly to restore basic water and dust protection.
