iPhone 17 Air Housing Replacement

Difficult2-4 h9 steps

The Apple iPhone 17 Air features a stunningly thin 5.6mm profile, but a bent or shattered frame requires a complete housing replacement. Because this device opens from the back and uses an electrically debonding battery adhesive, transferring components to a new housing requires precision. Expect to fully disassemble the phone, including the delicate A19 Pro logic board and modular USB-C port. Proceed with patience to avoid damaging the fragile flex cables hidden underneath the rear cover.

Required Tools

  • Heating pad or heat gun
  • Suction cup or screen opening tool
  • Plastic opening picks
  • 9-volt battery with alligator clips (for battery adhesive release)
  • Precision screwdriver set (Pentalobe, Tri-point, Phillips)
  • ESD-safe tweezers
  • Spudger (nylon or plastic)
  • Replacement Apple iPhone 17 Air housing
  • Replacement adhesive strips for the back glass

Step by step

  1. 1

Step 1: Remove the Bottom Screws

Power off the iPhone 17 Air completely before starting the repair.

Use a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two screws located next to the modular USB-C port.

  2. 2

Step 2: Open the Back Cover

Heat the back glass using a heating pad to soften the waterproof adhesive.

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge and insert a plastic pick, carefully slicing around the perimeter while avoiding the top hinges.

  3. 3

Step 3: Disconnect the Rear Flex Cable

Open the back cover slightly and push downward to release the top hinge mechanism.

Support the back glass and use a plastic spudger to disconnect the fragile rear cover flex cable from the logic board.

  4. 4

Step 4: Release the Battery Adhesive

Expose the battery tabs to access the electrically induced adhesive pads.

Connect a 9-volt battery using alligator clips (red to positive, black to negative) and wait about three minutes for the adhesive to debond safely.

  5. 5

Step 5: Remove the Metal-Cased Battery

Once the adhesive releases, gently lift the 3149 mAh metal-cased battery out of the chassis.

Do not puncture or bend the battery during this process to ensure maximum safety.

  6. 6

Step 6: Extract the Camera and Logic Board

Disconnect the 48MP Dual Fusion camera cables and carefully pry the delicate camera module out.

Remove the retaining screws and lift out the A19 Pro stacked logic board using ESD-safe tweezers.

  7. 7

Step 7: Transfer the Modular Components

Unscrew and transfer the modular USB-C port ribbon, the Taptic Engine, and the single top-firing speaker to the new housing.

Ensure all flex cables are seated flat in the new chassis to prevent pinching.

  8. 8

Step 8: Reinstall the Logic Board and Battery

Secure the logic board and camera module into the new housing.

Apply new adhesive strips, then carefully seat the battery back into place and connect its flex cable.

  9. 9

    Step 9: Seal the Device

Connect the rear cover flex cable to the logic board and align the top hinges of the back glass.

Press the back cover firmly into the new adhesive and reinstall the two bottom Pentalobe screws.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the iPhone 17 Air uses an electrically debonding adhesive. You will need a standard 9-volt battery and alligator clips to safely release the metal-cased battery.

The water resistance will be compromised once the factory seal is broken. You must apply high-quality replacement adhesive strips during reassembly to restore basic splash resistance.

Purchasing a housing with pre-installed small parts saves significant time and reduces the risk of tearing delicate flex cables.

Apple designed the iPhone 17 Air to open from the back. This back-opening method is safer and makes accessing the battery and logic board much easier without risking damage to the ultra-thin display.
