iPhone 17 Air Screen Replacement
A cracked, flickering, or completely black display means it is time to replace the screen on your iPhone 17 Air. Because this device features an ultra-thin 5.6mm profile and a delicate 6.5-inch OLED panel, you must handle the internal flex cables with extreme care. This guide will walk you through safely opening the front panel, disconnecting the battery, and installing a fresh display assembly.
Required Tools
- Pentalobe P2 screwdriver
- Tri-point Y000 screwdriver
- Suction cup or display opening tool
- Plastic opening picks
- Spudger
- Heat gun or iOpener
- Isopropyl alcohol (high concentration)
- Replacement iPhone 17 Air OLED screen and new waterproof adhesive
Step by step
- 1
Step 1: Remove the bottom screws
Power off your iPhone 17 Air completely before beginning the repair.
Use a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver to remove the two screws located on either side of the USB-C charging port.
Keep these screws organized on a magnetic mat so they do not get lost.
- 2
Step 2: Heat the display edges
Apply heat to the lower edge of the front screen using a heat gun or a heated gel pad.
Keep the temperature moderate to soften the waterproof adhesive without damaging the internal OLED panel or the front camera array.
- 3
Step 3: Create an opening gap
Apply a suction cup to the bottom edge of the screen and pull up gently to create a slight gap between the glass and the titanium frame.
Insert a plastic opening pick into this gap to prevent the adhesive from resealing.
Be very careful not to insert the pick too deeply, as the internal flex cables are fragile.
- 4
Step 4: Slice the display adhesive
Slide the plastic pick around the perimeter of the phone to cut through the remaining adhesive.
The ultra-thin design of the iPhone 17 Air means components are packed tightly, so keep the pick shallow.
Open the display like a book from the right side to avoid tearing the display cables located on the left.
- 5
Step 5: Remove the connector shields
Locate the metal cover plates protecting the battery and display connectors on the logic board.
Use a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the screws holding these shields in place.
Set the shields and screws aside in exactly the order you removed them.
- 6
Step 6: Disconnect the battery
Safety is your top priority during this step to prevent short circuits.
Use a plastic spudger to gently pry up the battery connector from its socket on the logic board.
Make sure the connector stays completely clear of the socket while you work.
- 7
Step 7: Disconnect the display cables
With the battery safely disconnected, use your spudger to pry up the display and digitizer flex cables.
Lift them straight up from their sockets to avoid bending the pins.
You can now completely remove the damaged screen from the device.
- 8
Step 8: Transfer the sensor assembly
If your new screen does not come with a pre-installed proximity sensor and microphone assembly, you must transfer these from the old display.
Remove the securing screws and use a little isopropyl alcohol to loosen the adhesive holding the sensors.
Carefully place them into the exact same position on your new replacement screen.
- 9
Step 9: Apply new waterproof adhesive
Thoroughly clean the titanium frame of the phone with isopropyl alcohol to remove any old adhesive residue.
Peel the backing off your new waterproof adhesive strip and align it perfectly with the frame.
Press it down firmly to ensure your device retains its moisture resistance.
- 10
Step 10: Connect the new screen and battery
Bring the new display close to the phone and snap the display flex cables securely into their logic board sockets.
Once the screen is connected, reattach the battery connector.
Reinstall the metal shields and secure them with their respective Tri-point screws.
- 11
Step 11: Test the new display
Before sealing the phone, power it on to test the new OLED screen.
Check the touch sensitivity across the entire surface and ensure the front camera and Face ID functions are working correctly.
Once you confirm everything is functional, power the device back down.
- 12
Step 12: Seal the device
Align the top edge of the display with the frame and gently press the screen down into place.
Work your way around the edges until the display sits completely flush with the titanium housing.
Finally, reinstall the two Pentalobe screws at the bottom near the USB-C port.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, Face ID will continue to work as long as you carefully transfer the original sensor assembly to the new screen without damaging it. You may also need to run Apple's System Configuration tool to calibrate the new display properly.
Apple serializes its components, meaning the logic board recognizes the serial number of the original screen. Unless you use a genuine Apple replacement and calibrate it through their official software, you will see a notification in your settings, though the screen will still function normally.
No smartphone is truly waterproof, but replacing the adhesive seal correctly will restore its water resistance. Always use a high-quality replacement adhesive strip and clean the frame thoroughly before applying it.
Glass-only repairs are highly complex and require specialized laser and lamination machines. For a DIY repair or standard shop fix, replacing the entire display assembly is the safest and most reliable method.
