Over time, lithium-ion cells inevitably lose chemical capacity, leading to rapid drainage, unexpected shutdowns, or a battery service notification below 80 percent maximum capacity. Replacing the battery restores standard runtime and peak processor performance. Expect to work carefully around fragile display flex cables and use a low-voltage electrical source to release the debonding adhesive safely.

  1. 1

    Discharge and Power Down

    • Discharge the battery below 25 percent to reduce the risk of thermal runaway if the cell is accidentally stressed or pierced during disassembly.
    • Completely power down the iPhone and remove the two P2 pentalobe screws flanking the USB-C port.
  2. 2

    Heat the Display Perimeter

    • Place the device on a heating mat at 70 to 80 degrees Celsius for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the factory waterproof perimeter adhesive.
    • Ensure the device does not exceed recommended temperatures to prevent display panel damage.
  3. 3

    Separate the Display Adhesive

    • Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the glass and pull upward with steady pressure to create a tiny gap.
    • Insert a plastic opening pick no deeper than 2 mm and carefully slice through the perimeter adhesive along the bottom and sides.
  4. 4

    Open the Display Assembly

    • Gently swing the display open toward the left edge like a book cover.
    • Rest the screen against a sturdy support bracket so the delicate flex cables are not strained or bent beyond their limits.
  5. 5

    Remove the Connector Shield

    • Use the tri-point and standoff screwdrivers to extract the screws securing the metal logic board shield.
    • Lift away the shield with non-conductive tweezers and keep every screw mapped by its exact location to prevent board damage during reassembly.
  6. 6

    Disconnect the Battery First

    • Immediately disconnect the battery press connector from the logic board using a plastic spudger.
    • With the device unpowered, disconnect the display and sensor cables to separate the screen assembly and set it aside in a safe location.
  7. 7

    Electrically Debond the Adhesive

    • Attach the positive lead of your 9V power source to the exposed adhesive release tab on the battery, then ground the negative lead to a bare metal chassis screw.
    • Maintain current for 60 to 90 seconds until the electrochemical bond releases completely.
  8. 8

    Remove the Depleted Battery

    • Lift the battery straight up and out of the housing without applying excessive bending force to the pack.
    • Clean any remaining residue on the frame using a lint-free wipe moistened with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol.
  9. 9

    Install the Replacement Battery

    • Attach the new adhesive film to the bottom of the replacement battery.
    • Align the cell accurately inside the frame cavity, seat the connector momentarily to ensure perfect positioning, then press the battery firmly into place.
  10. 10

    Reseal and Reassemble

    • Clean old gasket remnants from the chassis, apply a fresh perimeter adhesive seal, and reconnect the display cables followed by the battery connector.
    • Reinstall the metal bracket and screws, press the display firmly into the frame to activate the seal, and secure the two bottom pentalobe screws.
  11. 11

    Calibrate with Repair Assistant

    • Power on the iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi, and navigate to Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History.
    • Run the Apple Repair Assistant to calibrate the new battery and restore normal battery health reporting.

FAQ

Why is an electrical power source required to remove this battery?

Modern iPhones use electrically debonding adhesive. Applying a low-voltage DC current (9V to 12V) causes an electrochemical reaction that releases the adhesive bond cleanly without mechanical prying.

Why must the battery be disconnected before any other cable?

Disconnecting the battery removes live current from the logic board. This protects sensitive display and sensor chips from accidental short circuits caused by static or tool contact.

Is the phone fully waterproof after replacing the battery?

Installing a new pre-cut adhesive gasket restores splash and dust resistance, but factory-level immersion resistance cannot be fully guaranteed once the original seal is broken.

How do I remove the "Unknown Part" or service message after installation?

Complete the calibration process inside Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History using Repair Assistant to pair and verify the replacement part.
