iPhone 17 Pro Charging Port Replacement

Difficult1 to 2 hours12 steps

If your iPhone 17 Pro is struggling to charge, constantly disconnecting, or failing to transfer data via USB-C, the charging port assembly likely needs replacement. This repair is also necessary if the lower microphone stops working or if you receive persistent liquid detection warnings. Expect a complex teardown that involves removing the display, the Taptic Engine, and the bottom speaker to access the glued flex cable.

Required Tools

  • P2 Pentalobe screwdriver
  • Tri-point Y000 screwdriver
  • Phillips #000 screwdriver
  • Standoff screwdriver
  • Heat gun or heating pad
  • Suction cup or screen opening tool
  • Plastic opening picks
  • Nylon spudger
  • Precision tweezers
  • Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher concentration)
  • Replacement iPhone 17 Pro USB-C port flex assembly
  • Replacement waterproof display adhesive

Step by step

  1. 1

Step 1: Discharge the battery and power off

Drain your battery below 25 percent to prevent thermal runaway in case of accidental punctures.

Turn off the iPhone completely before starting the repair.

  2. 2

Step 2: Remove the bottom Pentalobe screws

Use your P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to extract the two screws located on either side of the USB-C port.

Keep these screws in a magnetic tray to avoid losing them.

  3. 3

Step 3: Heat and separate the display

Apply a heat gun or heating pad to the front edges of the device at 80 degrees Celsius for two minutes to soften the waterproof adhesive.

Apply a suction cup to the bottom edge, lift gently, and insert a plastic pick to slice through the adhesive around the perimeter.

  4. 4

Step 4: Disconnect the battery and display

Open the display like a book to the left side and remove the Tri-point Y000 screws securing the logic board cover.

Use a nylon spudger to safely disconnect the battery flex cable first, followed by the display and sensor cables.

  5. 5

Step 5: Remove the bottom speaker

Unscrew the fasteners holding the bottom loudspeaker in place.

Carefully lift the speaker out of the chassis using tweezers to expose the lower components.

  6. 6

Step 6: Extract the Taptic Engine

Remove the screws securing the Taptic Engine vibration module.

Disconnect its flex cable with a spudger and lift the engine out of the enclosure.

  7. 7

Step 7: Unfasten the USB-C port assembly

Remove the hidden screws securing the USB-C charging port to the bottom frame.

Disconnect the charging port flex cable from the logic board.

  8. 8

Step 8: Peel out the old charging port flex

Apply a few drops of high concentration isopropyl alcohol to soften the adhesive holding the port flex and lower microphone to the frame.

Gently peel the entire flex assembly out with tweezers while being careful not to scratch the housing.

  9. 9

Step 9: Install the new USB-C assembly

Align the new charging port and lower microphone into their respective slots in the frame.

Press down firmly to secure the adhesive and reinstall the port screws.

  10. 10

Step 10: Reassemble the internal components

Place the Taptic Engine and bottom speaker back into their original positions and secure them with their specific screws.

Reconnect the Taptic Engine and USB-C flex cables to the logic board.

  11. 11

Step 11: Apply new waterproof adhesive

Clean the old adhesive residue from the frame using isopropyl alcohol.

Apply a new pre-cut waterproof adhesive seal around the perimeter of the housing to restore moisture resistance.

  12. 12

Step 12: Reconnect the display and close the device

Reconnect the display, sensor, and battery cables, then secure the logic board cover.

Align the display with the frame, press it firmly into place, and reinstall the bottom Pentalobe screws.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The lower microphone is integrated into the USB-C charging port flex assembly, so replacing this part will resolve bottom microphone failures.

The USB-C port does not strictly require Apple Repair Assistant calibration for basic functionality, but running the diagnostic tool is recommended to ensure all sensors and data lines are working perfectly.

Ensure that the flex cable is fully seated on the logic board and that the battery connector is secure. You should also verify that the replacement part is not defective by testing it with a known good USB-C cable and a 20W adapter.

No. Opening the iPhone destroys the original waterproof seal. You must clean the frame and apply new adhesive to maintain moisture and dust resistance.
