iPhone 17 Pro Housing Replacement
A bent or severely scratched aluminum unibody frame can compromise your device's structural integrity and water resistance. This housing replacement guide will walk you through transferring all internal components of your iPhone 17 Pro into a new metal mid-frame. Because this requires a complete teardown of the phone, patience and careful organization of screws are essential. Expect to handle delicate flex cables and use a low-voltage power source to release the new battery adhesive.
Required Tools
- Pentalobe P2 screwdriver
- Tri-point Y000 screwdriver
- Phillips #000 screwdriver
- Standoff screwdriver
- Suction cup or screen opening tool
- Heat gun or iOpener
- Plastic spudger and opening picks
- 9V battery with alligator clips
- Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher concentration)
- Replacement water-resistant adhesive seals
- Anti-static magnetic project mat
Step by step
- 1
Step 1: Prepare the Device and Remove Bottom Screws
Power off your iPhone 17 Pro completely to avoid electrical shorts.
Use a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver to remove the two screws located next to the USB-C charging port.
- 2
Step 2: Open the Display and Back Glass
Apply heat to the edges of the phone to soften the waterproof adhesive.
Use a suction cup and plastic opening picks to carefully slice through the adhesive around the display and the rear glass panel.
Open them like a book and prop them up securely.
- 3
Step 3: Disconnect the Battery and Power
Use a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the cowling over the battery connector.
Use a plastic spudger to gently pry up the battery connector from the logic board.
This step is critical to ensure the device has no power flowing through it during the repair.
- 4
Step 4: Remove the Battery Using Electrical Release
The iPhone 17 Pro uses electrically released adhesive for the battery.
Connect the positive and negative terminals of a standard 9V battery to the designated silver tabs on the battery using alligator clips.
Wait about one minute for the adhesive to release, then gently lift the battery out of the housing.
- 5
Step 5: Extract the Camera Modules
Disconnect the flex cables for the front-facing camera, Face ID module, and the rear 48MP Fusion camera assembly.
Remove the securing screws and carefully lift the camera modules out with tweezers.
Place them on a clean surface where the lenses will not get scratched or dusty.
- 6
Step 6: Remove the Logic Board
Unplug all remaining flex cables connected to the logic board, including the display, charging port, and volume buttons.
Remove the standoff screws holding the logic board in place.
Carefully lift the logic board out of the frame, being mindful of the vapor chamber thermal system attached beneath it.
- 7
Step 7: Transfer the Peripheral Components
Move the Taptic Engine, bottom speaker, USB-C charging port, and microphone assemblies from the old frame to the new housing.
You must also transfer the physical buttons and their respective flex cables.
Take your time to ensure every small bracket and screw is placed exactly as it was in the original frame.
- 8
Step 8: Reassemble the Core Components
Place the logic board into the new housing and secure it with the standoff screws.
Reconnect the peripheral flex cables, then reinstall the camera modules and secure their cowlings.
Insert the battery into the new frame using fresh adhesive strips if the electrical adhesive does not retain its tackiness.
- 9
Step 9: Apply New Waterproof Seals
Clean the perimeter of the new housing with isopropyl alcohol to remove any dust or oils.
Apply the new water-resistant adhesive strips along the edges of the frame for both the front display and the rear glass.
Press firmly to ensure the adhesive bonds correctly to the metal.
- 10
Step 10: Connect Displays and Seal the Phone
Reconnect the display and back glass flex cables to the logic board and screw down their protective metal shields.
Fold the display and back glass into the housing and press around the edges to seal the device.
Finally, reinstall the two Pentalobe screws at the bottom and power on the phone to test all functions.

Frequently asked questions
No, your data is stored on the logic board. As long as the logic board is safely transferred to the new housing without damage, your data will remain intact.
If you are only transferring your original parts into a new blank housing, you do not need to reprogram anything. However, if you replace any biometric or display parts, you will need to run the Apple Repair Assistant to calibrate them.
Apple uses an electrically released adhesive system for the battery. Applying a small voltage to the specific pull tabs causes the adhesive to lose its grip, making battery removal much safer and easier.
The phone will have some water resistance if you properly apply new adhesive seals during reassembly. However, DIY repairs rarely achieve the exact factory IP68 rating, so you should keep the device away from water.
